Irwin Introduces PowerSlot Pliers for Reduced Cutting Effort

Posts by : Oliver Wilson

Irwin Tools has unveiled a new line of Vise-Grip PowerSlot pliers designed to dramatically reduce the physical strain associated with cutting wires and cables.

The initial release includes an 8-inch diagonal cutting pliers (IWHT84001) and a 9.5-inch lineman’s pliers (IWHT84000), both incorporating a unique PowerSlot design.

This innovative feature provides a mechanical advantage, allowing users to achieve a substantial reduction in cutting force – up to 50% on average when working with 12/2 non-metallic sheathed cable, compared to Irwin’s standard lineman’s pliers.

The diagonal cutters demonstrate a 30% reduction in cutting force when cutting similar cable types.

Constructed from 60CrV steel with laser-hardened cutting edges and an electrophoretic deposition coating, these pliers prioritize durability and corrosion resistance.

The ergonomic 3-shot bi-material handle grips enhance user comfort, particularly appreciated by those with larger hands.

Testing revealed that the PowerSlot design enabled cutting through thicker 10/2 cables with the diagonal cutters, a task typically beyond the capabilities of standard 8-inch cutters.

While the PowerSlot’s leverage requires a wider handle spread for equivalent jaw opening, Irwin’s engineers have carefully balanced this trade-off to deliver improved performance and ease of use.

These new pliers expand the range of wire and cable sizes manageable without excessive effort, representing a significant advancement in tool design for electricians and professionals alike.

Available now for $25 (diagonal) and $30 (lineman), they can be purchased on Amazon.
